COLD COMFORT FARM

Cenerentola secondo Stella Gibbons!

Life is not quite a fairytale for poor Viola. Left penniless, the young widow is forced to live with her late husband's family in a joyless old house. There's Mr Wither, a tyrannical old miser, Mrs Wither, who thinks Viola is just a common shop girl, and two unlovely sisters-in-law, one of whom is in love with the chauffeur. Only the prospect of the charity ball can raise Viola's spirits - especially as Victor Spring, the local prince charming, will be there. But Victor's intentions towards our Cinderella are, in short, not quite honourable ...

Except from http://robinmckinleysblog.com

"Viola Thompson is a shop girl with no prospects and, having no prospects, somewhat reluctantly accepts the proposal of a dull young man named Theodore Wither, because she is not likely to have any others. Theodore, however, is so convenient, or inconvenient, as to die after a year of marriage; and Viola goes to live with her in-laws: the appalling Mr Wither, the watery Mrs Wither, the jolly-hockey-sticks Madge and the neurotic Tina in a dire, frigid, over-furnished house marooned in a bit of Essex countryside. Viola is soon lonelier and more miserable than she can comprehend; and with nothing to look forward to, and nothing to think about except the one other large house in the area, where an extremely wealthy and rather handsome young man named Victor Spring lives with his mother and his cousin, gives flashy and dashing house parties, and is the romantic fantasy of every shop girl in Sible Pelden and Chesterbourne. This is not exclusively Viola’s story; Tina, although she has ‘kept her brain exercised by reading heavyish books, which might not always be truly wise but at least were not those meringues of the intellect . . . novels’, is in love with the chauffeur, who is twelve years younger than she is and has a drunken washerwoman for a mother, but is very good-looking: ‘. . . They saw him walk past the window on his afternoon off, wearing a grey suit in which he looked as beautiful as he did in his dark uniform (differing therein from many chauffeurs, whose appearance when in mufti suggests that of escaped convicts).’ And Victor Spring’s cousin, a young woman named Hetty, hates her comfortable, enforced high-bourgeois existence, and can’t wait for her twenty-first birthday, when she is going to run off to London and live in a garret.

Viola is an orphan; she was raised by her father after her mother’s death. He was a passionate amateur actor, and named her Viola after his favourite heroine: ‘She liked to watch her father as he read, and to listen to the smoothly rolling tones; she felt no curiosity about what the words meant. It was only Shakespeare, and she was used to him. . . . But Viola’s father was knocked down by a young man driving a car, and died in an hour.
‘The young man was fined, and had some severe remarks made about him, and drove away from the court faster than ever because he was so cross . . .’ which is to say this is Cinderella with an edge. As Mrs Theodore Wither Viola ‘was not very happy, because after he was married to her, Teddy discovered that she was not so poetic and marvellous as he had supposed, and naturally this made him less fond of her’. Of the exciting house on the far side of the nightingale wood: ‘The telephone rang every half-hour or so. Vans from Harrods, from Fortnum and Mason and Cartier, came up to the house . . . These were for Mrs Spring, whose hobby was shopping.’
This being Cinderella, there has to be a ball, and Viola has to go to it, and meet, and dance with, Prince Charming; and there is and she does. But then the ball is over, and she has to go back to the dire frigid house where there is nothing to do—one of the things Gibbons gets bang right to my eye is the mad, frenzied, hopeless boredom of being a nice bourgeois girl of that era. Viola thinks: ‘I wish I was dead. Well, not exactly dead, but I wish I was a nun or something, or something simply marvellous would happen tomorrow.’
Being a nice girl, she cannot ring up Mr Charming and suggest they go to a film together; besides, he is already engaged to be married, to an extremely well-turned-out scion of the smart set. But—finally—and with only a tiny acceptable amount of violent manipulation, she has an excuse to write him a letter: ‘She posted her letters, keeping Victor’s until the end and pushing it slowly through the letter-box, letting it fall at last into the darkness. She heard the little sound as it landed on the other letters below. She stood for a minute, staring at the box, then turned and walked slowly home.’ And that letter arrives at a crucial juncture, and . .."

L'Autrice:   Stella Gibbons

Stella Dorothea Gibbons was an English novelist, journalist, poet and short-story writer.

Her first novel, Cold Comfort Farm, won the Femina Vie Heureuse Prize for 1933. A satire and parody of the pessimistic ruralism of Thomas Hardy, his followers and especially Precious Bain by Mary Webb -the "loam and lovechild" genre, as some called it, Cold Comfort Farm introduces a self-confident young woman, quite self-consciously modern, pragmatic and optimistic, into the grim, fate-bound and dark rural scene those novelists tended to portray.

Cold Comfort Farm

Winner of the 1933 Femina Vie Heureuse Prize, COLD COMFORT FARM is a wickedly funny portrait of British rural life in the 1930s. Flora Poste, a recently orphaned socialite, moves in with her country relatives, the gloomy Starkadders of Cold Comfort Farm, and becomes enmeshed in a web of violent emotions, despair, and scheming, until Flora manages to set things right.

Tartufi bianchi in inverno   05.02.12

A breathtaking novel, rare and moving, about the world’s greatest chef and his unruly heart.

White Truffles in Winter imagines the world of the remarkable French chef Auguste Escoffier, (1846–1935) who changed how we eat through his legendary restaurants at The Savoy and The Ritz. A man of contradictions—kind yet imperious, food-obsessed yet rarely hungry—Escoffier was also torn between two women: the famous, beautiful, and reckless actress Sarah Bernhardt; and his wife, the independent and sublime poet Delphine Daffis who refused to ever leave Monte Carlo. Set in the last year of Escoffier’s life, in the middle of writing his memoirs, he has returned to Delphine, who requests a dish in her name as he has honored Bernhardt, Queen Victoria, and many others. How does one define the complexity of love on a single plate? Kelby brings us the sensuality of food and love amid a world on the verge of war in this work that shimmers with beauty and longing.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.

A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

New York Times

New York Times Book Review

Paris 1888. Armand and Odilon are young apprentice draughtsmen in the offices of Gustave Eiffel, working on what will be the engineer’s greatest invention and the city’s most famous landmark. The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of a new age, but in the exotic gas-lit streets of Paris, strange beliefs, dark desires and mysterious forces are loose. Soon Armand and Odilon find themselves involved with a spiritualist society who hold seances in the Paris Morgue, a card-reading clairvoyant, a female ventriloquist with a shady secret and a spirited young actress. Behind them all are the scheming machinations of Gordon Hole, an ambitious American architect who has vowed to destroy the Eiffel Tower before it can even be completed.

The perfect killer has no friends. Only targets.
A killer has only one code: the sword
When night falls, nothing can stop Kylar Stern

Today I speak about a series that really impressed me. Although sometimes the writer  confusing me with some things for granted and leads me to reread a few lines and then go back and reread them, I must say this is one of the most fascinating series of recent years. We are in the presence of a darkly violent story, that even though sometimes it is uncertain, it was well orchestrated with a perfect mix of action, adventure, fantasy, political intrigue, battles, wizards and much more. Taking up this book, which has a 'footprint predominantly male, but suitable for all, time flies, you plunge easily into the life and adventures of Azoth / Kular - which is great as a character, determined, hard ever unsatisfactory in expectations of the reader - that leaves no way for the reader who won with endless twists and turns narrative. I must say that I initially had conquered almost exclusively for the covers that (Deo Gratias) are the same as the originals, but then the plot and the conquest itself as a book after book an adventure worthy of time and money you invest, carefully by your bedside, ready to be reread again and again!

Attention to the plots, because the reading of the second and third novel, there may be spoilers!

1. The Way of Shadows

For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art. And he is the city’s most accomplished artist, his talents required from alleyway to courtly boudoir.
For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he’s grown up in the slums, and learned the hard way to judge people quickly — and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.

What reading on the sofa?

Living a happy life is not complicated. Just follow the rules. For example: never give a man just because he ate the last pack of gummy bear. Never move into a crumbling ruin to "find yourself" is likely only to become the laughing stock of others and of ridicule in front of everyone. And above all, do not fall in love with a man who has two daughters, an unhealthy attachment to his late wife - a woman that no perfect companion can never replace - and a mother who treats you as if you were home and think that your only function is to to clean and keep the house tidy. Maggie goes from one misadventure to another, loses his job in Dublin, Jimmy Choo drops its horrible to wear work boots and takes refuge in the sleepy town of Glacken. But it is a stubborn woman, does not give up and is even ready to do anything to achieve joy and serenity it deserves. A perfect life and a love of your dreams is waiting for her.
Its a very amusing book, pretty, light, in a word, really enjoyable! Just finished to read the first chapters reminded me immediately the Kinsella's verve and style, especially when she writes her independent novels , so if you liked K, I doubt you can't disdaining Greene.
The story is narrated almost already in the plot, the economic crisis we are in Ireland and Maggie, the protagonist of the novel, dumped boyfriend and lost her job with the excuse of "look after" the new home of her best friend (who goes on a retreat spiritual in India) moved in the country juggling a life that involves contact with animals, work outdoors, contact with the wacky inhabitants of the tiny village where finds herself.
Its an ironic and lively book, the writing is bubbly and is perfect if you're looking for something that makes you laugh and escape spontaneously, tore me more of a laugh involuntarily, because Maggie is really crazy!

Contro L'apocalisse

Elizabeth Phoenix once used her unique skills as a psychic to help in the Milwaukee Police Department’s fight against injustice. But when Liz’s foster mother is found viciously murdered—and Liz is discovered unconscious at the scene—her only memory of the crime comes in the form of terrifying dreams...of creatures more horrific than anything Liz has seen in real life. What do these visions mean? And what in the world do they have to do with her former lover, Jimmy Sanducci?
While the police question Jimmy in the murder, Jimmy opens Liz’s eyes to a supernatural war that has raged since the dawn of time in which innocent people are hunted by malevolent beings disguised as humans. Only a chosen few have the ability to fight their evil, and Jimmy believes Liz is among them. Now, with her senses heightened, new feelings are rising within Liz—ones that re-ignite her dangerous attraction to Jimmy. But Jimmy has a secret that will rock Liz to her core…and put the survival of the human race in peril.
I had read this book in English and I liked very much. Rereading it after a while I found the irony of the protagonist and intriguing plot that I remembered. I was rereading it I liked this story that is complicated to briefly, for the powers and the manner in which Elizabeth will "absorb", both for the large number of creatures that we find: From vampires to be demonic names coplicatissimi , to versipelli (worth reading just for this creature), the angels and so on and so forth.   In my opinion, the current scene, this reading, which is sent to an adult audience, is a very valuable read for those who like urban fantasy, where a main plot and orizzantale - for all the books that followed - that surprises at every novel twists that jaw-dropping every time, ssi contrasts the "problem ricolvere immediately" of each book. Moreover, the strong point of the series are the characters sopprattuto: Liz, Sawyer and Jimmy. There is a love triangle, I confess it immediately, but not limited to this, the characters have a past history and a character found only here so interesting, unusual, multifaceted and intriguing! Have positive and negative elements, and they love it odiani while, and eventually - piancendo all - it was very difficult, at least for me, see me having to take sides if scelgiere someone and having to say who, in Precise!  Probably the things that I wrote there makes the whole idea of the novel, but the fact that we select is a novel to be "tasted" it read, point, is not entirely my fault, I assure you, because on the one hand, even I, who are currently fourth book, I still completely understand some people - soooo enigmatic - and you can evolve with the plot, on the other hand, are introduced gradually, in the novels, the elements that distort things and ideas about the characters change. For me it was a choice because most just do not get bored and the stress is always around the corner, we do not know how things go.I will recommend it very much!

Innamorarsi a Manhattan
Kate Parker
Pagine 304
Prezzo € 10,00
Prezzo Ebook € 5,00

---oOo---
A man and a woman, their fates seem to be already written. She is a nurse with pediatric myth of Audrey Hepburn, himself a successful writer who has forgotten what it means to dream. Then the meeting at Tiffany's, a look, and time stops. In an instant their lives falter, and both glimpsed the possibility of a different future, but could not get involved until the end. Their time is intense, but it seems that it is intended to separate and do not see each other again. A year later they find themselves, protagonists in a novel which will be up to them to write the ending ... Will the magic of Tiffany to turn a simple moment into something special that will last forever? A delicate and profound novel that shines on every page. A story that reminds us of the power of love, and wonder who is hiding behind an unexpected encounter that can overturn a lifetime and perhaps give happiness to those who dare to face up to the last breath.
I did not like, I'll tell you. Setting of the plot, which involves a man and a woman who incontrana ONLY at the beginning and end of the book, or is an unforgettable novel or a story from the eternal slowness. Although I have read opinions really positive, bet on the latter. I got bored. And repetitive: she works, goes home and thinks of him, she works, goes home and thinks of him, etc. ... although not necessarily in that order, he works, goes home and thinks about her, etc. ... Stop. It does not happen nearly nothing. It is not "Before Sunrise", so to speak ...
Not that it's impossible to feel sympathy for the protagonists, the problem is that their first meeting, Due being romantic, not "burning" is not compelling to the point
a justification
the 300 pages. Sorry to say, but I have not found a justification for their deep feelings, and missing the irony, having suffered a story, the novel is weak. Not be ruled out completely, do not get me wrong, but I was expecting a very exciting first half, had to be by force, from my point of view, to drag the story ... and instead I took.
I do not feel I absolutely recommend it, there are readings best, especially with a location like New York!
