Racconti Ne La strada per Dune (The Road to Dune, 1985), antologia di racconti di Herbert, il racconto che dà il titolo al libro è un estratto immaginario di una guida per gli abitanti dell'impero che si recano in pellegrinaggio su Arrakis.

Tales In The Road to Dune (The Road to Dune, 1985), an anthology of short stories by Herbert, the story that gives the book its title is an excerpt of a guide for the imaginary inhabitants of the empire who go on pilgrimage on Arrakis.

Dune accoglie il lettore in un mondo dove i viaggi spaziali sono una realtà, la Terra è scomparsa e l’uomo abita moltissimi pianeti colonizzati e “addomesticati” grazie alle tecnologie avanzate (praticamente lasciate all’immaginazione del lettore). Il romanzo è ambientato prevalentemente sul pianeta Arrakis, chiamato anche Dune, una landa desertica e inospitale, unico luogo di produzione, raccolta e raffinazione del Melange o Spezia, una preziosa e insostituibile sostanza, fondamentale per la struttura simil feudale della società galattica, organizzata attorno al Landsraad, all'Impero e alle Gilde. Arrakis e la sua complessa ecologia fanno da sfondo alla sfida per il controllo del pianeta, narrata inizialmente tra la dinastia Atreides e quella Harkonnen. Due sono le caratteristiche principali ma anche i punti deboli di questa saga: le tecnologie molto complesse ma non spiegate nel dettaglio, tanto da complicare un po’ l’immaginazione del lettore che deve elaborare le informazioni; ed i dialoghi che sono molto curati, molto profondi, ma che  tendono ad essere eccessivamente lunghi.

In questo ciclo Herbert affronta bravura capacità e coscienza ambientazioni storiche molto simili al nostro medioevo; concetti filosofici molto profondi e interessati ed aspetti sociologico-religiosi (vera essenza che pervade tutta l’opera) che porteano ad una riflessione non indifferente.

Dune welcomes the reader into a world where space travel is a reality, the Earth has disappeared and the man lives many planets colonized and "domesticated" thanks to advanced technologies (basically left to the imagination of the reader). The novel is set mainly on the planet Arrakis, called Dune, a barren, inhospitable desert, the only place of production, harvesting and refining the Melange or spice, a precious and irreplaceable substance, essential for the structure of the feudal-like galactic society, organized around the Landsraad, the Empire and guilds. Arrakis and its complex ecology are the background to challenge for control of the planet, initially told the dynasty of the Atreides and Harkonnen. Two are the main features but also the weaknesses of this saga: the complex technologies, but not explained in detail, so much to complicate a little 'imagination of the reader who must process the information, and the dialogues are well kept, very deep, but tend to be excessively long.
In this cycle, Herbert addresses capacity and awareness skills historical settings very similar to our middle ages, very deep and philosophical concepts and issues relevant sociological and religious (true essence that pervades the whole work) leading to a not insignificant consideration.

1. Dune.

Ma sulla sua superficie cresce il melange, la sostanza che dà agli uomini la facoltà di aprire i propri orizzonti mentali, conoscere il futuro, acquisire le capacità per manovrare le immense astronavi che garantiscono gli scambi tra i mondi e la sopravvivenza stessa dell’Impero. 5. Gli eretici di Dune.

In Fortress of the planet Gammu, the twelfth ghola Duncan Idaho is watched closely by Reverend Mothers Schwangyu and Lucilla. 6. La Rifondazione di Dune.

Dopo la distruzione di Dune, l’equilibrio del vecchio Impero è sconvolto dalla violenza delle Matres Onorate, che hanno ormai conquistato decine di pianeti della Sorellanza, distruggendo l’unico luogo dove esisteva il melange allo stato naturale e sterminando i Tleilaxu che lo creavano artificialmente. Soltanto la Sorellanza Bene Gesserit è ancora in grado di opporsi alla distruzione. Alla Casa Capitolare si ricrea tramite la desertificazione il ciclo dei vermi della sabbia e del melange e prosegue l’addestramento del ghola bambino Teg, il vecchio Bashar, nell’ipotesi sempre più certa di un attacco. Il piano della Madre Superiora è semplice: attirare in trappola la Regina Ragno su Junction e distruggere le Matres Onorate. Il Bashar, ripristinato, organizza la forza d’attacco mentre l’ex Matre Onorata Murbella si sottopone all’Agonia diventando il primo ibrido che unisce i poteri di entrambe le Sorellanze.

Il volume conclusivo del capolavoro epico di Frank Herbert: inizia lo scontro tra i due ordini, l’universo sta per cambiare una volta per sempre.

After the destruction of Dune, the balance of the old Empire was shaken by the violence of Honor Matres, who have now won dozens of Sisterhood of the planets, destroying the only place where there was a melange natural state, and exterminating the Tleilaxu who created artificially . Film/Movie

La serie di Herbert ha influenzato profondamente il panorama fantascientifico, in primis Guerre stellari, come per stessa ammissione del suo ideatore George Lucas. Con l’avvento degli effetti speciali nel 1984 è stato finalmente prodotto un film, Dune, diretto da David Lynch, che ha cercato di compattare l'intera serie. In seguito al film sono stati prodotti anche numerosi videogiochi, mentre nel 2000 è stata realizzata una miniserie televisiva, Dune il destino dell'universo, seguita nel 2003 da I figli di Dune, tratta dal secondo e terzo romanzo del ciclo.

The series of Herbert deeply influenced the landscape of science fiction, Star Wars in the first place, as its creator's own admission of George Lucas. With the advent of special effects in 1984 was finally produced a film, Dune, directed by David Lynch, who tried to shrink the entire series. After the films were also produced numerous video games, and in 2000 was made a television miniseries, Dune the fate of the universe, followed in 2003 by Children of Dune, is the second and third novel in the cycle.

Frank Patrick Herbert (Tacoma, 8 ottobre 1920 – Madison, 11 febbraio 1986) è stato un autore di fantascienza statunitense.
Herbert è stato uno scrittore acclamato dalla critica ed ha contemporaneamente riportato un successo di pubblico a livello mondiale. Rimane noto soprattutto per il suo romanzo Dune e per i cinque successivi libri della serie. Il ciclo di Dune affronta temi complessi cari allo scrittore come la sopravvivenza umana, l'evoluzione, l'ecologia e la commistione di religione, politica e potere. Da molti degli appassionati del genere è considerata l'opera migliore di fantascienza epica mai scritta e rimane certamente una delle più popolari.

Frank Patrick Herbert (Tacoma, October 8, 1920 - Madison, February 11, 1986) was an American science fiction author.
Herbert was a critically acclaimed writer and has both a success rate of audiences worldwide. Remains best known for his novel Dune and the five subsequent books in the series. The cycle of Dune tackles complex issues dear to the writer as a human survival, evolution, ecology, and the mingling of religion, politics and power. For many of this genre is considered the best work of fiction epic ever written and certainly remains one of the most popular.

Premi/Awards

Dune vinse nel 1965 il Premio Nebula[1], a cui fece seguito il Premio Hugo nel 1966, cioè entrambi i massimi riconoscimenti nell'ambito fantascientifico. È morto l'11 febbraio 1986, all'età di 65 anni a Madison nel Wisconsin a causa di un'embolia polmonare mentre era ricoverato per un tumore al pancreas.

Dune won the Nebula Award in 1965 [1], which was followed by the Hugo Award in 1966, ie, both the highest awards in science fiction. He died on 11 February 1986 at the age of 65 years in Madison, Wisconsin because of a pulmonary embolism while he was hospitalized for pancreatic cancer.
