Maria V. Snyder ha iniziato la sua carriera da meteorologo diventando romanziere quando ha cominciato a scrivere il best-seller  del New York Times della Study Series con protagonista una giovane donna che diventa una degustatrice di veleni. Nata e cresciuta a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Maria ha sognato di dare la caccia tornado e persino guadagnato un “Bachelor of Science” in meteorologia presso la Pennsylvania State University. Purtroppo, le mancavano le competenze necessarie per la previsione. Quindi ha lavorato come meteorologo ambientale fino a che la noia e i bambini la spinsero a scrivere le storie che le giravano vorticosamente in testa. La scrittura, si è rivelata più divertente che la meteorologia, e Maria tornò a scuola per ottenere un Master of Arts in scrittura narrativa alla Seton Hill University. Maria è attualmente insegnante e mentore per il programma MFA. Tuttavia, il diploma di meteorologa  di Maria non è andato sprecato, no, niente affatto. E per dimostrarlo ai suoi genitori ... ehm ... visto che era ancora affascinata dal tempo, era in grado di giocare con il tempo mentre scriveva la sua pluripremiata Glass Series su una maga del vetro che può catturare la magia dentro le sue creazioni in vetro. Durante la ricerca per i libri di questa serie, Maria ha frequentato diversi corsi di vetro soffiato. Non vi è alcun bisogno di preoccuparsi sul fatto che possa cambiare carriera e diventi un artista del vetro in qualunque momento. Maria non possiede la coordinazione occhio-mano e avrebbe bisogno di anni di pratica per la produzione di un pezzo degno di visione. Tuttavia, l'intera esperienza è stata educativa, e lei ora possiede una vasta collezione di fermacarte deformi, bicchieri e ciotole. Anche l’esperienza ambientale di Maria non è  andata sprecata. I suoi alberi ... ehm ... la sua preoccupazione per l'ambiente viene fuori nei suoi libri Insider  dove si deve  riutilizzare e riciclare tutto. Una cosa su cui ha ragione in un mondo altrimenti incasinato! Tra i vari libri, Maria ha anche scritto numerosi racconti che sono stati pubblicati in una serie di antologie. Scrivere delle antologie è stata una sfida divertente e una pausa creativa tra lo scrivere storie più lunghe. Maria non avrebbe mai pensato di scrivere un racconto di vampiri fino a quando non le fu chiesto di scriverne una per un’antologia. Una volta che ha imparato che i suoi vampiri potevano essere cattivi , accettato la sfida e ha scritto una delle sue storie brevi preferite. Maria vive con la famiglia e un gatto nero nome Valek (alias l'assassino bug!) In Pennsylvania, dove è al lavoro su un altro libro e / o un racconto.
Maria V. Snyder switched careers from meteorologist to novelist when she began writing the New York Times best-selling Study Series about a young woman who becomes a poison taster. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Maria dreamed of chasing tornados and even earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University. Unfortunately, she lacked the necessary forecasting skills. So she worked as an environmental meteorologist until boredom and children drove her to write down the stories that have been swirling around in her head. Writing, proved to be more enjoyable than meteorology, and Maria returned to school to earn a Master of Arts degree in fiction writing from Seton Hill University. Unable to part company with Seton Hill and its wonderful writing program, Maria is currently a teacher and mentor for the MFA program.  However, Maria's meteorological degree did not go to waste, nope, not at all. And to prove it to her parents...er...since she is still fascinated with the weather, she was able to play with the weather while writing her award-winning Glass Series about a glass magician who can capture magic inside her glass creations. To research for the Glass books, Maria attended several glass blowing classes. There is no need to worry that she will change careers to glass artist anytime soon. Maria does not possess the hand-eye coordination and would need years of practice to produce a piece worth displaying. However, the whole experience was educational, and she now owns an extensive collection of misshapen paperweights, tumblers, and bowls. Maria's environmental experience also did not go to waste. Her tree-hugging...er...concern about the environment comes out in her Insider books comes out in both books. Trella's world is completely contained and they must reuse and recycle everything. One thing they got right in one otherwise messed-up world!  Between writing her books, Maria has also written several short stories that have been published in a number of anthologies (to learn more click here: Short Stories). Writing for anthologies is a fun challenge and creative break from writing longer stories. Maria never would have considered writing a vampire tale until she was asked to write one for an anthology. Once she learned her vampires could be bad guys (i.e. street punks with their boxers hanging out), she accepted the challenge and wrote one of her favorite short stories.  Maria lives with her family and a black cat name Valek (a.k.a. the bug assassin!) in Pennsylvania where she is at work on another book and/or a short story .

TRAMA/PLOT: Condannata a morte per omicidio, Yelena ha un'unica possibilità: diventare l'assaggiatore ufficiale del Comandante Ambrose. Ma le torture subite sembrano averle rubato l'anima, facendo di lei un simulacro vuoto, una farfalla di pietra simile al ciondolo donatole dal suo salvatore. Emozioni e sentimenti sono banditi entro le severe mura dell'antico palazzo reale, dove nessuno, amico o nemico, è ciò che appare. Nemmeno Valek. Uomo affascinante e spietato assassino, maestro di veleni e raffinato scultore, sembra essere lui a possedere il cuore della fanciulla e l'antidoto al veleno mortale che le ha somministrato a tradimento.

La storia si apre all'interno di una cella fredda, sporca, umida; con una protagonista, Yelena, torturata, patita, magra, con i lunghi capelli sporchi, coperta di insetti e pulci, con le unghie sporche e rotte, con la pelle emaciata ed incrostata di sangue. Yelena è stata condannata a morte per aver commesso un omicidio, senza appello, senza alcuna speranza perché ha ucciso il figlio di uomo crudele e potente. La storia è ambientata nel territorio di Ixia dove, a seguito di un colpo di stato che ha eliminato il  re, la regina e la corte tutta, detiene il potere un austero comandante e vige un rigido sistema militare che ha diviso il regno in diversi distretti amministrativi retti ciascuno da un generale. Non esiste la magia, è stata bandita e confinata nel territorio di Sitia. Non esiste però la povertà, ad ogni abitante di Ixia è data un'occupazione, una divisa che lo classifica ineluttabilmente ad una determinata classe sociale alla quale apparterrà sino alla morte. Le regole sono ferree e non sono previste eccezioni di sorta. Yelena, una volta accettata l’alternativa, alla morte, di diventare  l’assaggiatrice ufficiale del comandante, inizia a conoscere tutto ciò durante l’apprendistato che Valek, consigliere del comandante Ambrose, gli fornirà man mano durante le lezioni a cui è obbligata, nelle quali conosce ed assaggia veleni potentissimi e mortali. Troviamo in questo primo romanzo una Yelena apatica e anaffettiva, è stata troppi anni in una cella buia e oscura, confinata solo con se stessa, con i suoi pensieri, a sentire quello che prova e quello che pensa; non crede più nelle persone, non dialoga quasi mai, è un muro fatto di gomma, non si sente neppure più una persona … accettando l’opportunità che le viene offerta da Valek torna mano a mano a vivere, comprende cosa vuole dire interagire, affidarsi a qualcuno, anche innamorarsi e concedersi all’amicizia di due soldati buoni e disponibili: Ari e Janco.
The story opens in a cold cell, dirty, wet, with a protagonist, Yelena, tortured, suffered, lean, with long dirty hair, covered with fleas and insects, with dirty fingernails, broken skin emaciated and caked in blood. Yelena was sentenced to death for having committed a murder, without appeal, with no hope because she killed the son of cruel and powerful man. The story is set in the territory of Ixia where, following a coup that removed the king, the queen and the whole court, the power is set in a the hands of a commander and there is an austere military force with a rigid system that has divided the kingdom into several districts each governed by a general administrative. There is no magic, has been banished and confined in Sitia. Anyway there isn't poverty, to each inhabitant of Ixia is given a job, a uniform that classifies it inevitably lead to a certain social class to which belong unto death. The rules are strict and there are no exceptions. Yelena, once accepted, the alternative to death, to become the official taster of the commander, learn all this rules during the apprenticeship Valek, adviser to the Commander Ambrose, will provide as during class to which it is obliged, in poisons such as taste and learn to become powerful and deadly. In this first novel we find an apathetic and neglectful Yelena, she stay too many years in a dark cell, confined only by herself, with her thoughts, to feel what she feels and what she thinks, no longer believes in people, not talks almost, she became a wall made of rubber, doesn't trust in the peolple ... not anymore ... accepting the opportunity that is offered by Valek gradually returns to live, including what it means to interact, to rely on somebody, to love and enjoy 'good friendship between two soldiers and available : Ari and Janco.

TRAMA/PLOT: Yelena torna alla terra e alla famiglia cui era stata strappata e comincia il durissimo addestramento alla magia. Belve feroci, complotti e minacce di oscuri avversari non sono tuttavia i soli pericoli che deve affrontare nella selvaggia Sitia: un misterioso assassino, che paralizza e uccide come un serpente, ha deciso infatti di impadronirsi dei suoi poteri. Nella lotta per salvare se stessa e il suo mondo, Yelena troverà gli amici di un tempo e soprattutto Valek, l'unico uomo impermeabile alla magia, ma non al suo amore.
Yelena returns to the earth and whose family was torn and the magic begins the tough training. Wild beasts, dark conspiracies and threats of opponents are not the only dangers facing wild in Sitia: a mysterious murderess, that paralyzes and kills like a snake, it has decided to take control of his powers. In the fight to save herself and her world, Yelena finds the friends of a particular time and Valek, the only man impervious to magic, but not his love.

Se il primo romanzo di questa serie si svolgeva quasi interamente in ambienti chiusi e fortezze, e senza particolari magie, questo secondo romanzo vira verso gli ambienti aperti, i grovigli di liane e il fitto fogliame delle città costruite sugli alberi alla ricerca delle radici e della famiglia a cui Yelena era stata strappata da piccola e di cui lei non ricorda praticamente nulla. Scompaiono le rigide regole e costruzioni di Ixia e prende posto un mondo di scoperte per Yelena che finalmente ha preso in mano le redini della propria vita. E’ un cambiamento totale e molto piacevole e permette al letttore di non annoiarsi nella lettura e per cui risulta completamente e nuovamente tutto nuovo! Nota un pochino negativa è che si sente la mancanza di Valek e dei due amici di Yelena fino alla seconda metà del romanzo, ma si rimane incollati alle pagine comunque.
If the first novel in this series took place almost entirely indoors and fortresses, and no special magic, this second novel veers toward open environments, the tangles of vines and the dense foliage of the cities built on the trees in search of roots and Yelena family that had been torn from a small and she does not remember almost anything. Disappear with the strict rules and construction of Ixia and takes place a world of discovery for Yelena finally took over the reins of their lives. It's a total change and very pleasant and can not get bored the reader, it's all completely and totally new! Note a little negative is that you feel the lack of Valek and Yelena two friends until the second half of the novel, but it remains glued to the pages anyway.

Ma all'improvviso il nemico di sempre torna a colpire, più crudele ed efferato che mai. E a lei non rimane che affrontarlo, abbracciando fino in fondo il proprio destino. Perché questa volta avrà una sola occasione per mettere alla prova i limiti del proprio potere e per salvare ciò che ha di più caro al mondo.
When the news that she is a Seeker of Souls spreads like wildfire throughout Sitia uncontrollably, spreading unrest in the Citadel, and Yelena, already regarded with suspicion because of his past, he finds himself once again alone. But suddenly the enemy of all time returns, more cruel and vicious than ever. And all that remains of her face, embracing all the way his own destiny. Because this time will have only one opportunity to test the limits of its power and to save what is dearest to the world.

Libro che costituisce conclusione e degno finale della trilogia. Dopo aver sconfitto un nemico ad Ixia ed uno a Sitia è tempo che le due città, nonché le due visione delle due della vita e della politica, vengano a confrontarsi e così è in quest’ultimo romanzo. Sempre più magia, ma anche e soprattutto intelligenza che deve battere in arguzia e astuzia altra intelligenza fino ad un finale imperdibile e all’altezza delle aspettative. Non posso dire di più.

Final book, worth conclusion of the trilogy. After defeating an enemy at Ixia and one in Sitia it's time for the two cities and the two outlook on life and politics to confronted, and that happen in this latter novel. More and more magic, but also and above intelligence that has to beat the other in wit and cunning intelligence up to the final missed and lived up to expectations. I can not say more.

Questa trilogia è sicuramente una lettura affascinante, interessante, piacevole e imperdibile per tutti coloro che amano i fantasy ben studiati e ben scritti, per coloro che cercano una storia scritta con cura, che cattura l’attenzione del lettore e non la lascia andare facilmente; che rispetta il lettore e non getta lì tematiche scontate o di facile risoluzione, che vuole e che pretende essere colpito con qualcosa di cui ha bisogno di essere stupito; che mentre leggere vuole assaporare atmosfere particolare ed evasive, ma che al contempo riflette e anche dopo aver chiuso l’ultima pagina non dimentica facilmente la storia e i suoi protagonisti. I temi che vengono affrontati in questa trilogia (che va letta nella sua totalità) sono infatti intensi, si parla di politicaa, di totalitarismo, di dominio e di libertà, di amicizia e delle necessità di ogni essere umano. La Snyder è riuscita a creare una storia affascinantissima, molto toccante e molto profonda. Ci muoviamo in ambito fantasy, quindi incontreremo la magia, il problema di gestire la stessa. Yelena dovrà venire a patti  con essa, perché scoprirà essere parte del suo passato e parte di lei; parte indispensabile e irrinunciabile. Anche i coprotagonisti di questo romanzo non sono meno affascinanti e veramente intriganti, hanno spessore e non mancano di carattere e forza. Sappiamo infatti che sebbene gli eroi siano tali non lo sono appieno se non hanno delle “spalle” che li controbilancino. A partire dallo stesso Valek, di cui si scopre il passato poco a poco, si diventa sempre più curiosi si di esso, siamo intrigati dal suo passato, dalle sue capacità e talenti, dalla sua totale fiducia nel comandante. E' un libro veramente imperdibile e indimenticabile, ve lo consiglio. In Italia è stato pubblicato dalla Bluenocturne, della Mondadori (reperibile richiedendo gli arretrati) e in Inglese dalla casa editrice Harlequin (ma fate attenzione, il lato romantico è veramente solo una piccola piccola  parte del romanzo!).

This trilogy is certainly a fascinating read, interesting, enjoyable and a must for all those who love the fantasy well-researched and well written, for those looking for a story written with care, that captures the reader's attention and not let go easily; that respects the reader and not thrown in discounted or easily resolved issues, and claims he wants to be hit with something that needs to be amazed, that while reading and want to enjoy atmospheres particularly evasive, but that both reflects and even after you close the last page does not easily forget the story and its protagonists. The themes that are addressed in this trilogy (which should be read in its entirety) are indeed intense, it comes to polished, totalitarianism, domination and freedom, friendship and the needs of every human being. The Snyder has managed to create a spick story, very touching and very deep. We move in the field of fantasy, then you can see the magic, the problem of managing the same. Yelena will have to come to terms with it, find it to be a part of her past and her part, the essential and indispensable. Even the co-protagonists of this novel are no less fascinating and very intriguing, and there have thick thick. We know that although both these heroes are not full but have "shoulders" that outweigh them. Starting from the same Valek, of which the past is discovered little by little, it becomes more and more curious, intrigued by his past, from his skills and talents, from his total confidence in the commander. A book truly unmissable and unforgettable, I recommend it. In Italy it was published by Bluenocturne, Mondadori (available by requesting the arrears) and in U.S.A by the publisher Harlequin (but beware, the romantic side is really  a small small fraction of the novel!).
