About the Artist.

Brooke Shaden è una fotografa d'arte che vive e lavora nella zona di Los Angeles. La sua passione consiste nel creare nuovi mondi attraverso le fotografie. La sua visione si estende oltre al regno della macchina fotografica, creando immagini che assomigliano a quadri e parlare di un'epoca che non è nostra. Ogni immagine è una storia.   Brooke Shaden is a fine art photographer living and working in the Los Angeles area. Her passion lies in creating new worlds through photographs. Her vision extends beyond the realm of the camera, creating images that resemble paintings and speak of an era that is not our own.Each image is a story.                                                                                                                           Brooke Shaden è nata nel marzo del 1987 a Lancaster, PA, USA. E 'cresciuta nei pressi del "Country Amish" e ha frequentato il Temple University. Brooke fotograficamente nasce nel dicembre 2008 dopo la laurea al Temple con due diplomi: in film e in inglese. Lei ora risiede a Los Angeles, CA, USA con il marito e tre gatti. Ha iniziato creando autoritratti per facilità e per avere il pieno controllo sulle immagini, da allora è cresciuta fino a diventare un'artista dell'autoritratto . L' autoritratto per lei non è autobiografico in natura. Lei cerca di mettersi all'interno di mondi in cui spera possiamo vivere, dove ci segreti galleggiano all'aria aperta, dove l'impossibile diventa possibile. Brooke lavora per creare nuovi mondi all'interno della sua cornice fotografica. Utilizzando tecniche pittoriche, come anche il formato quadrato, e le tradizionali proprietà fotografiche sono sostituiti da elementi ultraterreni.La fotografia di Brookemette in discussione la definizione di ciò che significa essere vivi.       

Brooke Shaden was born in March of 1987 in Lancaster, PA, USA. She grew up near the "Amish Country" until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with two degrees: film and English. She now resides in Los Angeles, CA, USA with her husband and three cats.  She began creating self-portraits for ease and to have full control over the images, and has since grown into a self-portrait artist. Self portraiture for her is notautobiographical in nature.                                                                                                                                  Instead, she attempts to place herself within worlds she wishes we could live in, where secrets float out in the open, where the impossible becomes possible. Brooke works to create new worlds within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. Brooke's photography questions the definition of what it means to be alive.  

About the Her Works.

"Nello spazio di una cornice quadrata, cerco di costruire un mondo che è innegabilmente separato da quello in cui viviamo Quello che mi affascina è che qualsiasi mezzo artistico  può portare lo spettatore da un mondo logico e comune, all'interno di un posto senza spazio e più vivo. Quando uso una cornice quadrata, mi auguro che lo spettatore si dimentichi che stia guardando una fotografia e veda invece una realtà alternativa, quella che mescola le qualità pittoriche con il surrealismo e fantasia.  "

 "Perché concentrarsi su ciò che il mezzo artistico è, quando il soggetto e il concetto ci stanno tirando sempre più profondamente in un mondo che ci permette di sfuggire alla nostra realtà, in cambio di una fantasia? Il mio scopo in fotografia è far bello ciò che che altri trovano inquietante, di prendere un concetto semplice (sia esso nascita, morte, o una via di mezzo - vita) e plasmarlo in qualcosa di complesso e magnetico. Le mie fotografie sono destinate ad essere lette e analizzate. Il simbolismo è abbondante in essi, come rendere una storia intricata, se non con immagini che significa una cosa, ma stanno (a significare) altro? Esplorare la morte e il surrealismo attraverso la mia fotografia significa dimostrare che la realtà ha legami intricati con fantasia. "

Il nostro mondo non è poi così diverso da quello dei mondi inquietanti che creo nei miei fotogrammi. Io sostengo che le mie immagini surreali sono ancora più rappresentativi della vita perché contengono sentimenti e le emozioni che risuonano negli spettatori. A volte la vita non deve essere fotografato in base alla realtà, perché invece non esplorare le profondità della mente e dell'anima per raggiungere qualcosa di più profondo della realtà che ci affligge e ci intrappola ogni giorno? Le mie fotografie modificate sono ben lontane dall'immagine originale che esce dalla macchina fotografica. 

"Aggiungo texture a loro per dare una sensazione di sporcizia e di età, dando le fotografie un sentimento senza tempo. Spesso gioco con i toni in modo che il soggetto venga evidenziato e il paesaggio cada per una leggera desaturazione e l'abbandono. Il vero nodo cruciale della mia fotografia è il ritratto; è catturare l'emozione di un singolo istante in una vita. Certo, sono tutti in una scena  programmata e  finita, ma tutti mantengono una sorta di emozione drammatizzata (una vera emozione, quasi insopportabile sentire), che risuona nello spettatore."

 
"Voglio che il mio immaginario vada oltre il regno della fotografia invece di imitare i dipinti e gli stili alternativi d'arte. Non sono tanto innamorata di un particolare mezzo dell'arte quanto piuttosto mi sono innamorato della rappresentazione visiva delle storie che ho nella mia mente. E questa qualità pittorica che emulo, come ad esempio l'uso di pennellate sulle mie fotografie, che ritengo che diano al mio lavoro un tocco unico. C'è una sensazione particolare in tutte le mie fotografie, che tocca la giustapposizione del reale sul surreale, una fantasia e un sogno crivellato dalla realtà. "

"Within the space of a square frame, I try to build a world that is undeniably separate from the one we live in. What fascinates me about any artistic medium is that it can pull the viewer out of a logical and common world, and place them within a space that is more alive. When I use a square frame, I hope that the viewer will forget that they are looking at a photograph and instead see an alternate reality, one that mixes painterly qualities with surrealism and fantasy".

Why focus on what the artistic medium is when the subject and concept are pulling us deeper and deeper into a world that allows us to escape our reality in exchange for a fantasy? It is my goal in photography to make beautiful that which others find disturbing, to take a simple concept (be it birth, death, or something in between – life) and mold it into something complex and magnetic.

"My photographs are meant to be read and analyzed. Symbolism is abundant in them, for what makes an intricate story if not visuals that mean one thing but stand for another? I explore death and surrealism through my photography in order to show that reality has intricate ties with fantasy. Our world is not so different than the disturbing worlds I create within my frames. I argue that my surrealistic images are even more representational of life because they contain feelings and emotions that resonate with the viewers."

"Sometimes life does not have to be photographed according to reality; instead, why not explore the depths of the mind and soul and reach for something deeper than the reality that plagues us and traps us daily? My edited photographs are a far cry from the original image that comes out of the camera. I add texture to them to give a feeling of grime and age, thus giving the photographs a timeless feeling." 

"I often play with the tones so that the subject is highlighted and the scenery falls away in to slight desaturation and abandonment. The real crux of my photography is portraiture; it is capturing the emotion of a single instance in a life. Certainly they are all staged and planned and scrutinized over, but they all hold some sort of dramatized emotion (a real emotion, almost unbearable to feel) that resonates with the viewer.
I want my imagery to move beyond the realm of photography and instead mimic paintings and alternate styles of art. I am not in love with any particular medium of art as much as I am in love with visually representing the stories I have in my mind."

"It is this painterly quality that I emulate, such as the use of brush strokes over my photographs, that I think gives my work a unique touch. There is a particular feeling to all of my photographs, one that touches on the juxtaposition of the real yet surreal, a fantasy and a dream yet riddled with reality. "
