L'Alchimi[st]a

Today I decided to propose a novel with a close connection to the speech made yesterday about the style of Steampunk and mingling with other similar genres such as Cyberpunk. "The Alchemist - The Secret of the Gargoyle," just published in Italy thanks to Asengard / publisher, The Castle, because it offers adventure as a novel that involves both the mechanical elements that robotic ones, thus calling into question both genders.

Mattie, automation has intelligence, emancipated and skilled alchemist, is in the midst of a conflict between Alchemists and Engineers for the city government Ayona, known as the City of the Gargoyle statues that stand on the buildings and why they have came to life, back when they had the power to shape the stone. While the old social and political order is quickly giving way to new, Mattie learns of dangerous secrets, secrets that can completely change the balance of power in the city. But such a situation is unacceptable for Loharri, the technician who created Mattie and that has - quite literally-the key to his heart.

Imagine a city, not as many, but a rock-carved rose from the rocks and stones, created by the immutable and persistent gray rock that rests in the belly of the mountains. This city is special, because it shaped by the Gargoyle, which once completed have not abandoned to itself, but they continue to sorvergliarla spiers and roofs of the city; stubbornly continue to watch her like angels still deformed.Imagine now that the city has evolved, over time, technological and mechanical work of two opposing factions but omnipresent in the life of this city: Engineers and the Alchemists, always against each other. Times change, people change, and even rock immortality becomes a burden intolerable and endless Gargoyle no longer feel they want. It is not enough to live by observing the lives of others through, not enough to live without feeling anything, nor the air that touches them, nor the pain Ayona, torn by wars and internal policies aimed increasingly at the gates, the peasants dissatisfied and replaced by robots in the countryside. Now they want something that only a person can give them. Now, the Gargoyle want to be liberated from the rock, as they did for the city and want to live.

L '"Alchemist" begins from here. From a board a bit special (changing the nature of the rock in the vital essence) given to a particular person (un'automa Alchemist) from the creatures that live on the roofs of Ayona.

The main character is Mettie, a sweet and troubled automaton who tries to lead an apparently normal in a world and a system that sees only created to meet the needs of its engineer-owner, and that in fact the ' accept. Mattie is not accepted because its creator-owner, Loharri, has endowed her with un'intelletto that allows her to think, to reason, but also feelings, and in a society that sees the robots as objects, is not acceptable . Not only that, with willpower and courage has been emancipated from its creator, lives alone (he has an apartment, a small, but her), she works as Alchemist (was enrolled in the study) having all of its clients that allow to earn the money to spend on books that he loves beyond measure. However, the small automaton is not completely free because Loharri has never given the opportunity to be completely such. You must know that fact Matti has a heart, a heart of metal, of course, and occasionally the iron core that is ticking inside got crazy and gets stuck and immobilized causing her to lose consciousness, consciousness as well. Only the key around his neck Loharri can restart the intricate mechanism of gears that allow Mattie to live, but the key can not be his because it wants to force her to Loharri frequentalo, to need him, because he knows that otherwise would prevent the Mettie forever.

The turning point for the life of the small and sweet automaton (it's really tender!) Comes when the Gargoyle - watching from above that they wanted to take her under their wing following him everywhere - they want to find a cure for their "vital flame" . Being an alchemist Mattie begins to experiment, but not coming to any resolution speaks with Loharri, who advised her to talk with another alchemist, dead, by the fumigator Anime (which contains many souls "absorbing" with opium in his body) that can act as a conduit for them. With the information as otterà, an alchemist's encounter stranger named Niobe, that will begin on the properties of human blood (no no vampires) and the acquaintance of a mysterious and fascinating man that will overheat in all directions , Mattie learns new words and feelings such as love, friendship, betrayal, hatred, neglect, violence, the size and value of time, pain and acceptance, and to a thrilling finale bittersweet.

In a setting where the world takes overriding colors of gray and black, where the political and ideological conflicts are on the agenda, the Chair has created and shaped with a very interesting evolution of a star sweet: Mattie. Although un'automa is absolutely and profoundly human. Mattie Serbian un'animo good, generous, almost pure, under the bark of steel. I say almost because it is precisely his imperfections and his human fallibility and to make us side with her throughout the novel, we want an honest and liberating for her final at the end of the story.

Mattie is ashamed of what is being seen in public when he loses his senses, he feels hurt when the guards hunt for what it is and despise with a "get automatically", you are a person, and he hates it so much Loharri perhaps because of it, for it is created, for what it is and what is not. Despite all the efforts that it is always just a jumble of metal, not mistress of herself, the key does not have her. I made an incredible tenderness! The chair described with a kindness and tenderness almost touching the gentle soul, yet stubborn Mattie, you actually feel the battle raging in the protagonist, the inner soul trapped in a metal body cumbersome and unacceptable for herself , at the mercy of a creator who is believed to be a master and is subject to the end. The Chair and masterfully portrays very well the inner part of the protagonist.

In general I would say that the novel is definitely deeper than it may seem, at least for me, because it is a politically and ideologically - the oppression, repression, rebellion, the condemnation - that a Morally and interior, from a simple and interesting story, the author traces the parallels to regimes pseudototalitari, the revolt against them, but also the most extreme consequences that can bring the technologized all-in all sectors, especially designed to replace the men out of work with which feed themselves, they rebel, and with its fatal consequences.

I do not give a vote to the full volume as I think the author while crafting a very valuable book, both for content and form, lacking a bit of introspection than some secondary characters, while understanding the intentions of which, do not fully grasp the inner and then I would have liked some more explanation about some events in the book that you will almost for granted. There are still elements that do not undermine the beauty of the story of Mattie.
