È l'estate del 1979 a Marin, California.

- Può, prima di tutto, raccontare ai lettori del italiani la storia che andranno a leggere in "After Her/Dopo di lei"?

Beh, questo romanzo si potrebbe definire thriller, perché tratta di una caccia a un serial killer brutale. Ma è anche una storia d'amore. Si tratta del rapporto di un padre e le sue figlie, ma soprattutto ... riguarda il profondo legame di due sorelle, più grande di tutto il resto.

- "After her/Dopo di lei" è  un romanzo che parla di sorelle. Quale tipo di persone sono e che tipo di rapporto esiste tra di loro e hai approfondito e raccontato nel romanzo?

Le due sorelle, Rachel e Patty, sono tipologie di giovani donne molto diverse - come per molte sorelle (questo è stato certamente vero per mia sorella maggiore e me.) Rachel è una scrittrice e una pensatrice, una cantastorie, una romantica. Patty è un' atleta, un cuore puro innocente. Sono reciprocamente migliori amiche. Non è un rapporto che abbia potuto sperimentare con la mia sorella,  e questo è il motivo per cui ho amato scrivere questo libro: così ho potuto immaginare un tale connessione.

- In "After her/Dopo di lei" i lettori possono percepire chiaramente sia il lato positivo che il lato oscuro di Rachel e Patty. Hai amato scrivere dell'analisi introspettiva di questi personaggi?

Non c'è niente che ami di più di esplorare in profondità il funzionamento del comportamento umano. Per me, è più eccitante di un crimine, o la guerra, o dell'alta finanza, o degli inseguimenti in auto. Il dramma delle relazioni umane: questo è il mio territorio.

- In "After Her/Dopo di lei" (ma anche nei tuoi romanzi precedenti) ho notato che prediligi soffermarti sui dettagli dei un rapporto, di un sentimento, di un legame tra le persone che poni come protagonisti. E' interessante vedere come analizzi le piccole cose che circondano le persone di cui parli e i loro sentimenti e il loro intimo. E' una cosa propria del tuo animo, che ti viene automatico rivelare e indagare anche nella vita o è una meccanica che scatta solo quanto scrivi?

Come ogni scrittore che conosco, sono un'osservatrice del comportamento umano. Guardo le persone, le ascolto, e soprattutto mi interrrogo di tutte le cose che non dicono, a cui probabilmente stanno pensando.

- Ho notato che nei tuoi romanzi, quanto parli di affetti, di sentimenti, sei solita soffermarti più sulle crepe di quest'ultimi, piuttosto che parlare di quanto procede ben. In "After Her/Dopo di lei" quali soli i punti deboli e le piccole crepe che si creano tra le due sorelle protagoniste?

Per quanto mi piacerebbe che la nostra vita scorrese uniformemente e facilmente, invariabilmente le migliori storie si verificano quando le cose non vanno in questo modo. Le difficoltà e il dolore ci insegnano molte lezioni, e ci rivelano dove siamo. Mi dispiace dirvi che quando scrivo, la prima cosa che faccio è quello di individuare i personaggi che mi preoccupano profondamente. Poi ... e questo è terribile! ... Devo fare accadere loro qualcosa di brutto. Poi devo arrivare a capire come potrebbero sopravvivere.  

- Che cosa significa per te scrivere un libro come "dopo il suo"?Questo romanzo è la mia esplorazione della sorellanza ... che cosa vuol dire essere una sorella. Ho amato scrivere "After her/Dopo di lei", perché ho avuto modo di vivere con queste due splendide giovani donne per un anno intero - nella mia testa, almeno - e di immaginare che cosa sarebbe stato essere come una di loro. Qualche volta questo è stato spaventoso, naturalmente.

- Can you, first of all, tell to italian readers what kind of story they will read in "After Her"?

Well, you could call this novel a thriller, because it involves the hunt for a brutal serial killer.  But it's also a love story.  It's about the relationship of a father and his daughters,
but above all…it's about the deep bond of two sisters .  greater than all else.

- "After her" is a novel about sisters. What kind of people they are and what kind of relationship exists between them?

The two sisters , Rachel and Patty, are very different kinds of young women --as is true of many sisters.  (This was certainly true of my older sister and me.)  Rachel is a writer and a thinker, a story teller, a romantic.  Patty is an athlete, a pure , innocent heart.  They are each other's best friend . It's not a relationship i ever experienced with my own sister, which is part of why I loved writing this book:  so i could imagine such a connection.

- In "After Her" readers can clearly perceive both light and dark side of Rachel and Patty.
How much you loved write about the introspective analysis of this characters?

There is nothing i love more than to explore the inner workings of human behavior. 
To me, that is more thrilling than crime, or war, or high finance, or car chases.  The drama of human relationships:  that's my territory.

- In "After Her" (but also in your previous novels) I noticed that you like dwell  on the details of a relationship, about the feelings and the link between characters.  Moreover its interesting to see how you analyze the small things that spin around people that you are talking about, and their feelings in the deep.  It something that belongs to you as a person and it will automatically detect and investigate in life or is a mechanism that is triggered you only when you writing?

LIke every writer i know, i am an observer of human behavior. I am always watching people, and listening, and most of all I am wondering about all the things they do NOT say , that they are probably thinking.

- I noticed that in your novels, when talk about emotions, feelings, you usually dwell
more on the cracks of this emotions, rather than talking about what goes well. In "After Her" which only the weak spots and small cracks that form between the two sisters protagonists?

As much as I would like our lives to go smoothly and easily, the best stories invariably occur when they don't go that way.  Trouble and sorrow teach us many lessons, and reveal to us where we are.  I am sorry to tell you that when i write, the first thing i do is to locate characters i can care about deeply.  Then--and this is terrible!--i must make something bad happen to them.  Then i get to figure out how they might survive it.

- What means for you write a book like "After Her"?

This novel is my exploration into the meaning of sisterhood--what it means to be a sister.
I loved writing After Her because i got to live with these two wonderful young women for a whole year--in my head, at least--and to imagine what it would be like to be one of them.  Sometiems this was scary of course.  

But it was also a beautiful experience.
