Art & Reality : Alyssa Monks

I've  knew the artistic production (unfortunately not all) of Alyssa Monks for the first time at an exhibition in New York. I was not too excited about that when a friend suggested it to me, but when I saw his work I was struck by lightning - and when you see what she painted, I'm sure that you also understand why. Alyssa paints - mostly - the human figure submerged in water, with the oil. Probably one of the hardest things in this world in painting, why? Because water deforms, moves and budge the body, distorted human figure, which remains - most of the time, almost deformed. The water has the ability to model the shapes at will, in its random and unknown taste, sometimes creating imaginative and ethereal images, sometimes funny and awkward shapes, but also empty and undertows that random paint, believe me, it is not not easy. Think about when you look from an immense body in a pool (clothed or not). The perspective changes, the forms change, swell, enlarge and decrease in some parts, creating a "whole" very special. There's no sense, therefore, define the Monks only "good" and "capable", because these few words isn't fairly. The Monks are superb artist, capable, versatile and worthy of all praise that has been moved.
Do not believe me?
Check it out:

"Monks’ paintings explore the tension between abstraction and realism, using different filters to visually distort and disintegrate the body."

In this shallow painted space, the subject is pushing against our real space. Strokes of thick paint in delicate color relationships are pushed and pulled to imitate glass, steam, water and flesh.

“When I began painting the human body, I was obsessed with it and needed to create as much realism as possible. I chased realism until it began to unravel and deconstruct itself” A. Monks

Alyssa states, “Realism and Abstraction are in a symbiotic relationship – they need each other to exist and eventually become the same."
